Campus issues first transparency report

Saying “privacy is fundamental to the University of California, Berkeley,” the campus has issued its first transparency report on requests for student, faculty and staff data — including police and other government requests — and how they are handled.

According to a new post on Slate’s “future tense” blog, Berkeley is the first university in the country to do so.

“Other higher-ed institutions should follow Berkeley’s lead,” writes Slate blogger April Glaser, who is described at the bottom of the post as an Oakland–based writer and activist who works on digital rights issues.
