Signatures Innovation Fellows Program invites faculty to apply

By Public Affairs

UC Berkeley’s Signatures Innovation Fellows Program, which supports faculty and researchers in data science and software projects, is inviting applications as it expands to a second cohort.

The program has a special focus on projects that hold commercial promise, and is designed to develop and support faculty entrepreneurs and their teams of post-docs and graduate students interested in launching start-up companies.

Signatures Innovation Fellows each receive research support of up to $100,000 a year for up to two years. The fellows become part of and contribute to an ecosystem that brings faculty, post-docs, students, staff and alumni together in a network that helps researchers bring their discoveries to the market.

Launched last spring, the program’s first two fellows are Alexei Pozdnoukhov, an assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering whose project focuses on urban mobility analytics. and Jasjeet Sekhon, a professor of political science and statistics who is working to improve tools for public opinion research.

Applications are now open for a second round of fellows. All UC Berkeley ladder-rank faculty working in the areas of data science and software are eligible to apply. The deadline for 2016/17 awards is Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015.
