Berkeley rises in 'Times Higher Education' rankings

By Public Affairs

UC Berkeley rose to 10th place in the world — up from 13th last year — in the newly published Times Higher Education ‘s World University Rankings.

The University of Oxford bumped CalTech from first place to second in the 2106-17 rankings. And Stanford University, the University of Cambridge and MIT repeated as third, fourth and fifth.

The rankings are the latest in a string of recent assessments that place Berkeley high in the academic world. Earlier this month, U.S. News & World Report again named Berkeley the No. 1 public university in the U.S., and the ARWU world rankings released in August found Berkeley at the top of the list of public universities and third overall,

In rising to 10th place in the world, tied with the University of Chicago, Berkeley recovered much of the ground it, among other universities, lost last year to a big change in Times Higher Education ‘s methodology, doubling the number of institutions included and using a different source of bibliometric data.
