Campus offers grants, inspiration to combat sexual violence

UC Berkeley will award 10 mini-grants of up to $2,500 each for community-based initiatives that help change social norms and end sexual violence and harassment, part of a series of events and activities planned this month by a coalition of campus groups ranging from the ASUC Sexual Violence Commission and the Department of Gender and Women’s Studies to the Interfraternity Council at Berkeley.

An applicant workshop will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, from 4 to 5 p.m. to outline the mini-grant initiative and answer questions. Attendance is highly recommended but not required. Those interested can register here .

This month will also feature a workshop and presentation by Keith Edwards, both on Thursday, Oct. 27.

From 9 to 10:30 a.m, Edwards, who speaks frequently at college campuses nationwide on sexual violence prevention and related issues, will lead a workshop titled “Putting My Man Face On.” The breakfast session is geared to Berkeley faculty, postdocs, visiting scholars and staff who want to engage students and peers in talking about healthy masculinities and college men’s identity development.

That evening, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Edwards will speak at Pauley Ballroom on the topic of Preventing Sexual Violence and Harassment ,” a presentation for the entire campus community described as an “opportunity for people of all genders to learn about our culture, what it means for our communities, and how to influence change.”
