According to the latest Berkeley IGS Poll , California voters think highly of their U.S. senators, Dianne Feinstein and Kamala Harris, both Democrats. But fewer than half support Feinstein seeking re-election, while by a greater than two-to-one margin they favor Harris staying in the Senate rather than running for president right now.
While 50 percent of the state’s electorate give Feinstein a good job rating, she received a heartier, 59 percent endorsement in March. She recently encountered backlash after an interview in which she said Donald Trump could become a good president if he made changes.
Fewer than half of those surveyed for the latest poll from UC Berkeley’s Institute of Governmental Studies said they are inclined to support a re-election bid by Feinstein, who will be 84 in the next election cycle.
Sen. Harris, meanwhile, received an endorsement from 52 percent of the state’s voters, and 49 percent said they prefer that she stay in the Senate rather than run for the Oval Office. The freshman senator has been mentioned as a contender for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination next time around.
As for U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi, most California Democrats think the party should choose a replacement as its leader in the House of Representatives after the 2018 congressional elections. Pelosi was the House speaker from 2007 to 2011, the only woman to hold the position. It is the highest rank achieved by any female politician in United States history.
