Before a tree falls in the forest...

Removing a eucalyptus tree

A campus landscape crew used a large crane on Friday to remove a hazardous eucalyptus tree from the edge of the grove near the west entrance to campus.

Tim Pine of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety said campus trees that show signs of leaning are carefully monitored, particularly during wet weather. This tree was showing signs of accelerating movement after this week’s storms.

Interlocking root systems stabilize the trees in the center of the grove, but those along the edges are potentially vulnerable to falling onto roads and walkways, Pine said.
