Vice Chancellor Scott Biddy sent this message today to the UC Berkeley campus community:
Dear Campus Community,
The chancellor has informed me that he has accepted the resignation of vice chancellor for real estate Robert Lalanne, effective immediately. We will announce our plans for the management of the real estate portfolio shortly, but it is our intention to eliminate the vice chancellor position and continue the effort to strategically manage our physical assets.
Bob took on the new role of vice chancellor for real estate in January 2014 with responsibility for campus real estate projects in addition to the planning, building and operations of facilities on and off campus. During the last two years, he has come to know the campus culture and needs regarding physical assets. A comprehensive review was carried out on the central campus to determine the existing condition, as well as the maintenance and renewal needs, of all campus facilities. Bob also led major building projects including the Bowles Hall historic renovation, Jacobs Hall in the College of Engineering, the Maxwell Stadium Parking Garage and the Koret Visitor Center at California Memorial Stadium. Bob also played a central role in planning and launching the development at Albany Village of senior housing and retail that will bring the campus $1 million annually in ground lease payments.
Noted for his focus on the big picture, Bob has been a great resource in identifying opportunities that are consistent with our values and that optimize our resources. He has worked collaboratively with a range of campus colleagues and project stakeholders to improve the performance of the real estate portfolio and to generate needed revenue. His work has extended beyond the campus to our colleagues at the Office of the President.
Even more, Bob has been a loyal alumnus who has contributed his time, energy and resources to the good of his alma mater. I speak for the entire campus when I express my gratitude to Bob for his devotion to the Berkeley campus and its mission.
