Media Advisory: Thousands to move into student housing this weekend

This weekend, thousands of students are set to move into housing at the University of California, Berkeley. By the time classes begin on Thursday, Aug. 26, an estimated 6,000 undergraduates, including 500 international and 600 out-of-state students, will have moved into campus residence halls.

WHAT

This weekend, thousands of students are set to move into housing at the University of California, Berkeley. By the time classes begin on Thursday, Aug. 26, an estimated 6,000 undergraduates, including 500 international and 600 out-of-state students, will have moved into campus residence halls. Another 1,200 undergraduates and graduates will have moved into UC Berkeley-run apartments and family housing.

WHEN

Credentialed news media are invited to cover Move-in Weekend this Sunday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m.–noon at Unit 2, located at Haste Street and College Avenue.

DETAILS

Move-in weekend kicks off Welcome Week, Aug 23-27, when new students take campus tours and attend orientation workshops, lectures and receptions. Highlights include:

  • New Student Convocation, Monday, Aug. 23, 3:45-6 p.m. All new undergraduates are invited to hear from Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and other speakers at a picnic dinner on Memorial Glade.
  • Chancellor’s Receptions for New Undergraduates, Tuesday, Aug. 24-Thursday, Aug. 26, 4:30-5:30 p.m. New undergraduates can meet the chancellor at invitation-only gatherings at the Chancellor’s Garden, University House.
  • Calapalooza, Thursday, Aug. 26, 5:30-9 p.m. More than 300 student groups, campus services and performers will introduce themselves to new students at this annual resource fair at upper and lower Sproul Plaza.
