UC Berkeley issued the following statement on Wednesday after UC Berkeley graduates Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal were released from prison by Iran and flown to Oman.
“We are relieved and thankful that our two alumni, Josh Fattal and Shane Bauer, will soon be reunited with family and friends after more than two years of imprisonment,” said Claire Holmes, UC Berkeley associate vice chancellor for public affairs. “Ever since the release a year ago of their companion, Cal alumna Sarah Shourd, we have hoped and advocated for the release of Josh and Shane as well. Today’s news brings a joyful end to what was a heartbreaking ordeal for our alums and their loved ones.”
