Police shoot armed suspect at Haas School

Campus officials report that a shooting took place this afternoon at 2:25 p.m. in a computer lab at the Haas School of Business.

A staff member saw a man with what appeared to be a gun on an elevator at the Haas School, police said. The sighting was reported to UC Berkeley police, who responded immediately. The suspect entered the computer lab, where police asked him to put up his hands. Police said the suspect then pulled out a gun in a threatening manner, and fearing for the safety of themselves and others in the room, the suspect was shot.

The Haas School was temporarily evacuated. It has now reopened, with the exception of the computer lab, which has been contained.

Police remain on the scene, and the victim is at a local hospital where he is in surgery. No other injuries have been reported, and there are no other suspects beyond the one in custody.

UC Berkeley’s Warn Me system was activated by police to alert the campus community of the incident and that it was contained. A press conference was held at 4 p.m. at California Hall by Chancellor Robert Birgeneau and UC Berkeley Police Chief Mitch Celaya.

Updates of this incident will be forthcoming.
