Chancellor’s message regarding death of Cal student
Chancellor Birgeneau offers hearfelt condolences in the shooting death of Cal student Christopher Travis, and directs the Cal community to counseling resources offered by University Health Services related to the Haas School incident.

Dear Cal Campus Community:
Today our Cal community is grieving the death of Cal student, Christopher Travis. We offer our most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. Christopher died as a result of wounds suffered in a shooting by University Police at the Haas School of Business. The tragic circumstances of his death are under investigation. Yesterday afternoon’s shooting was unrelated to activities happening at Sproul Plaza. We are grateful to the Haas staff for their alertness and to the police for their quick response to the situation that may have averted further tragedy or injury to our students, faculty and staff. The safety of our campus community is among our highest priorities.
Counselors are available through the Tang Center at 2222 Bancroft Way to any member of our campus community who may want to seek support. Students may contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) at (510) 642-9494, or drop-in for urgent counseling. Faculty and staff may contact CARE Services, the employee assistance program, for telephone consultations and appointments at (510) 643-7754. Counselors also are available to attend classes and meetings of student groups or campus departments to help you address the impact of this tragic incident.
