Gearing up for the 50th anniversary of the Free Speech Movement during the fall 2014 semester, UC Berkeley has launched a new, interactive website with a visual history of the momentous events of 1964.

In concert with FSM Veterans, a group of students involved in the protests at Berkeley, the visual history was developed to outline the cultural and political environment of 1964 and the events that comprised a period of student activism that influenced freedom-of-speech regulations on college campuses across the United States.

In addition to the timeline, visitors to the site will find biographies of  Berkeley students, faculty and staff who were major players of the Free Speech Movement, along with additional resources, such as images, video, news coverage, books, documentaries and a graphics toolkit.

Students are also invited to submit designs for the 50th-anniversary commemorative poster contest, co-sponsored by the campus’s “On The Same Page” program and the Office of Communications and Public Affairs. In addition to campus recognition, the winner will receive a cash prize of up to $2,000. The deadline to enter is Friday, May 30, at 5 p.m.

Many events are scheduled to commemorate the anniversary of the FSM, including: On the Same Page reading list, a noon rally on Oct. 1 on Sproul Plaza, the Mario Savio Memorial Lecture on Oct. 2 and a “Berkeley Talks” panel discussion with Chancellor Nicholas Dirks and luminaries from the world of social activism. For details, see the special events calendar.
