Move-in weekend signals the end of Berkeley’s summer slumber, with thousands of new students pouring into the campus’s residential halls. Many arrive with their families in tow to help move mountains of stuff into rooms and suites — before making their proud and often teary farewells. UC Berkeley photographer Hulda Nelson caught some of the action over the weekend:
Many hands make move-in day go smoothly at Freeborn Hall, Unit 1.
Freshman Betty Birbo (right) arrived with her family: from left, dad Getachew Birbo, older sister and Stanford student Melat Birbo and mom Asamenech Arega; standing behind is little sister Bethany Birbo.
Taking a quick break from moving were Roaya Jannatipour and her mom, Saida Chenbouni.
Freshman Jesse Conser, in the middle, brought her aunt, Kelli Arnold, and her mother, Kathi Conser.
Unit 1 staff were ready with rolling orange bins and hand trucks to keep move-in rolling.
Lending a friendly hand was Bie Aweh, resident director of Unit 1's Cheney and Christian.
Freshman Selena Chow, in the middle, is flanked by her sister Carrie Chow, a Berkeley alum, and their mom, May Chow.
