UC Berkeley professor Nicholas Jewell has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, one of the highest honors possible in the fields of health and medicine. The academy recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service. Jewell becomes Berkeley’s 11th living faculty member in the National Academy of Medicine.

A professor of biostatistics and statistics in the Department of Statistics and the School of Public Health, Jewell is an expert in statistical methods related to infectious diseases, biostatistical techniques in epidemiological data analysis, survival analysis and stochastic processes and genomics. At Berkeley since 1981, he has held many leadership roles, serving as vice provost from 1994 to 2000.

“I was delighted to hear the news and very humbly grateful for all the shoulders that have supported me over the years. It is particularly gratifying since so few biostatisticians are elected to the National Academy,” said Jewell. “The award inspires me to keep working to improve the health of all people around the world but especially vulnerable populations.”

In 2007, Jewell was elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general scientific society, for seminal contributions to biostatistical methodology and their applications to current health problems and for editorial leadership in the statistical sciences.

New National Academy of Medicine members are elected by current members who recognize individuals who have made major contributions to the advancement of the medical sciences, health care and public health. Jewell is among 70 newly elected regular members and 10 international members, bringing the academy’s total membership to 2,127, plus 172 international members. Last year, Stefano Bertozzi, dean of the Berkeley School of Public Health and a professor of health policy and management, was elected to the academy
