A mass exodus from California? Not exactly, says new Berkeley study

Editor’s Note: On March 4, 2021, Berkeley News published an article saying that the numbers of California residents moving out of the state during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic were in line with historical patterns, but that the number of people moving into California from other states had declined. The article was based on original research from the California Policy Lab at UC Berkeley.

On Feb. 28, 2022, the Lab issued an errata for its research report. Because of an error in its calculations, the Lab announced, its report underestimated the number of out-of-state residents moving to California since the start of the pandemic.

To minimize the risks of confusion, Berkeley News has removed its coverage of the report from circulation.

The Lab’s staff researchers are working to revise the analysis and conclusions. Berkeley News will report on the revised findings as soon as they are available.
