Posters, pizza and outdoor Roger Corman movie part of BAM/PFA’s fall semester welcome for new students

The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (BAM/PFA)  is planning a special welcome to UC Berkeley’s newest students.

New students examined BAM/PFA posters at last year’s Poster Pizza Palooza.

This Thursday (Aug. 25), new freshmen and incoming transfer students with official Cal student I.D. will be admitted free of charge to the museum on Bancroft Way starting at 7 p.m.. The night’s program will feature  free classic art posters from BAM/PFA’s many exhibitions over the years, along with piping hot pizza and tunes by student DJs.

Then, following the Poster Pizza Palooza inside the museum, students and the general public are invited to head outdoors to the sculpture garden for a free, plein air screening of Roger Corman’s 1956 sci-fi classic, “It Conquered the World.” The plot line of the low-budget film favorite centers around an alien from the planet Venus and a trouble-making, disgruntled scientist.

These students found posters to their liking at last year’s BAM/PFA welcome night.

Representatives of the BAM/PFA Student Committee will be on hand throughout the evening to advise new members of the Cal community about the museum’s extensive academic resources and activities. Those benefits include the PFA Library and Film Study Center, free tours for students most Thursdays and Sundays in the museum’s 11 galleries that feature about 15 exhibitions every year, many drawn from BAM/PFA’s world-class collection that spans 3,000 years.

Every year the BAM/PFA Student Committee presents several student-only events at the museum,  ranging from gallery openings, career seminars and film screenings, to larger events such as the Fall Arts Fest, a celebration of student artists, musicians, and performers at Cal. The committee also hosts an evening celebration for students each spring.

Organized by students for students, such events aim to expose new student audiences to BAM/PFA’s programs and resources. The BAM/PFA Student Committee includes Cal students from diverse backgrounds, interests and majors and starts in the fall semester.
