Media advisory: World Bank economist to talk about lessons of China’s growth

WHAT: In a special University of California, Berkeley, presentation on “Demystifying the Chinese Economy,” Justin Yifu Lin, chief economist and senior vice president at the World Bank and an authority on the Chinese economy, will talk about how China transformed itself from one of the poorest economies in the late 19^th century to an economic powerhouse today.

Lin will discuss causes of the dramatic change and what other developing countries can learn from the surge.

The event will be free and open to the public.

WHEN: 4-6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 29

WHERE: The Bancroft Hotel Great Hall, 2680 Bancroft Way, on the southern edge of campus, just west of the intersection of Bancroft Way and College Avenue. A map and directions are online.

DETAILS: Lin will be the guest of several UC Berkeley entities, including the Institute of Governmental Studies, Institute of East Asian Studies, Center for Chinese Studies and Department of Agricultural Resources and Economics.

He will be available for 30 minutes following the talk for media questions.

Lin was the founding director of the China Center for Economic Research at Peking University and is the author of 17 books, including the soon-to-be-published “Demystifying the Chinese Economy.”
