Media Advisory: UC Berkeley’s Center for Right-Wing Studies begins three-day conference

WHAT: UC Berkeley’s Center for Right-Wing Studies will hold its inaugural conference beginning Thursday.

This interdisciplinary conference will feature dozens of new and established scholars from around the world whose work deals with the Right as a social, political and intellectual phenomenon from the 19th century to today.

WHEN: Thursday, April 25 to Saturday, April 27. A complete schedule of events is available online.

WHERE: Thursday evening’s keynote presentation, “Perspectives on the Far-Right Insurgency: Latin America, Europe, and the U.S.,” will be held in the Sibley Auditorium in the Bechtel Engineering Center on UC Berkeley’s campus.

The Friday and Saturday panels will be held at various locations on campus.

PANEL TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:

• Understanding right-wing mobilization through online communications and social media analysis
• Women and gender on the right
• Development of the U.S. right throughout the 20th century
• Origins and trajectory of “America First”
• Male supremacist ideology and mobilization in the contemporary United States

ABOUT THE CENTER FOR RIGHT-WING STUDIES:

Founded in 2009, the Berkeley Center for Right-Wing Studies is a research unit dedicated to the study of right-wing movements in the 20th and 21st centuries.

The mission of the center is twofold: first, to identify right-wing movements, flesh out their 20th-century histories while isolating their novel aspects in the 21st century; and second, to develop and apply principles of how right-wing thought, ideology and organizational capacities operate to understand the state of the contemporary right and identify its likely directions and successes.
