Filming on campus
Those wishing to shoot documentary, educational or long-form news videos on campus should contact the Media Relations office via email, [email protected].
For commercial and/or dramatic video shoots, contact Kyle Gibson in the Capital Strategies office, [email protected]. For more information, visit the site Campus Filming Program: How to Film at Berkeley.
Students acting as journalists
Notwithstanding policies described above, a student is permitted to engage in journalism activities in any physical location of campus to which that student otherwise has access in their capacity as a student, and is not required to seek advance permission from the campus to do so. All students should generally be mindful that California is a two-party recording state (meaning the recording party must seek the express consent of the recorded party prior to making a recording) and that instructors generally own and control the rights to the intellectual property expressed in their lectures.
Subject to the cautions noted above, a student acting as a journalist is generally permitted to engage in video and audio recording in any campus location to which that student otherwise has access in their capacity as a student, so long as they are not recording what anyone says without their permission and/or violating reasonable expectations of privacy.
